Like so many things in our lives until we directly experience something our judgement or thoughts about something are filtered by our preconceived ideas, others’ opinions or superficial evidence or views. Preconceived thoughts can have both positive and negative effects. On the one hand, they can help us make quick decisions and judgments, and provide a sense of predictability and comfort. On the other hand, they can limit our ability to see things objectively, lead us to stereotype or discriminate against others, and prevent us from having new experiences. It is important to recognize our preconceived thoughts and challenge them, when necessary, in order to broaden our perspectives and avoid unfair judgments or biases.

Thoughts of these judgements can be noted on pageants, believing its all glitz and glamour, that its only external beauty, its easy, the woman are egotistical, it does not take any talents,
Well as a recent participant in a pageant, I can say it is anything but easy and egos are not involved. I have never been in a pageant and till this year never thought I would enter one. Well never say never. The question is why? Why at the age of 65 enter a pageant? It is an opportunity to acquire new skills, gain new perspectives and discredit ageism. I am so fortunate and honored to have won the crown as the new Ms. New York Senior America for 2023/24. I recognize the crown is a megaphone to ignite energy for discrediting ageism and discrimination in the workplace and support my community outreach to Veterans and active Military, the Homeless coalition, Lupus Foundation, American Heart Society along with participating with local and global community fundraisers for charities close to my heart.
Participating in a pageant can bring many valuable experiences, such as:
- Personal Growth: Preparing for a pageant requires hard work, discipline, and dedication. Contestants often must work on their communication skills, stage presence, talent, and physical fitness. The process can be challenging, but it can also be rewarding and empowering.
- Confidence Building: Participating in a pageant can help build confidence and self-esteem. Competing in front of an audience and a panel of judges can be nerve-wracking, but it can also be an opportunity to highlight one’s unique qualities and abilities. The feedback and support from judges, coaches, and fellow contestants can also boost confidence.
- Community Building: Pageants often bring people together from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Contestants can build friendships and connections that can last beyond the pageant. Participating in a pageant can also provide a platform to raise awareness about social causes and community involvement.
- Scholarship Opportunities: Many pageants offer scholarship opportunities to contestants. These scholarships can help offset the cost of tuition and provide access to higher education. I think those sixty and over are not looking for this reward, but more to teach that age is only a number and that there is plenty of fun living left, and extraordinary value of older woman in the workplace.
- Advocacy: Many pageants have a platform or cause that they support and entering a pageant can be a way to raise awareness and promote advocacy for a particular issue.
- Career Opportunities: Winning a pageant can open doors to various career opportunities, such as modeling, acting, and public speaking. Pageants can also provide exposure to different industries and professions and opportunities to contribute to charitable fundraisers as a speaker.
- Pageant diversity: Many pageants are open to women of all ages, and entering a pageant at an older age can help promote age diversity and challenge societal stereotypes about beauty and aging. Pageants for woman over the age of sixty create friendships, some laughter and empowerment over judgement. It is more about support and praise for stepping out regardless of age and having fun.

The senior pageant crown gives honor to women who have reached an age of elegance. The competition is a 30% interview, for character, personality, leadership, conversational ability, and charm. 20% is an evening gown, not the price of the dress, but the poise, grace and elegance reflecting style in life. 20% is public speaking one’s philosophy of life, in a 35 second message. 30% is talent. Choices are singing, dance, instrumental, drama, comedy, and public speaking,
Entering a pageant at an older age can provide a unique opportunity for personal growth, advocacy, community involvement, competition, and age diversity. It can be a chance to challenge oneself, connect with others, and make a positive impact on the community. I am on a mission to have more women enter the 2024 and beyond pageants. I encourage you to step out, rise up and embrace life with confidence, don’t say I would never, I can’t, I would never win, … It’s about the challenge, the win comes for just stepping out of your comfort zone and connecting with like-minded women. I am savoring this journey and will be advocating to discredit ageism in the workplace and inspiring women to awaken that these are the best years of our lives. It is time to refresh, reignite and reenergize …join me in celebrating life, continuing to grow, move and engage in new and exciting opportunities.
